Celebrate Spring with Nepenthe Wines 🌿

Nepenthe Wines in the Adelaide Hills opened their new cellar door this year, with stunning views and stylish indoor and outdoor spaces.

Built with a sustainability focus in mind, South Australia’s first eco-concrete slab was part of this exciting new build. Solar energy and local stone masonry used for the fireplace and feature wall also added to its sustainability. Nepenthe’s range of wines has long been a favourite, so I was delighted to accept an invitation to write about some of my preferred varietals. Enjoy reading about these ideal ‘spring’ wines.

A good Prosecco’s seasonality speaks of spring and a great Prosecco literally sings springtime on one’s palate. Nepenthe’s Sparkling Prosecco is fairly new to their range and, in my opinion, is one of the best produced locally. It’s clean, crisp and fresh, with lovely notes of fresh citrus and a zesty finish – the perfect accompaniment to cheese and antipasto boards.

Around a decade or so ago when we were still running our Ristorante Vino in Unley, I had my first introduction to ‘Grüner Veltiner’. I instantly fell in love with its unique and fresh taste. A varietal thought to be indigenous to Austria, Grüner Veltliner wines have gained in popularity in Australia over recent years and are also perfect to enjoy during the season of spring. Nepenthe Wines Altitude Grüner Veltliner 2020 evokes a beautiful balance of acidity with a hint of herbaceous spice and sweetness – although make no mistake, this is a dry style wine which pairs beautifully with seafood and Asian food.

Pinot Noir is another of my personal favourites for springtime. Its subtle spice and smooth finish always pair well with Australian lamb (at its premium during spring) and vegetable dishes, as well as seafood, poultry and some cheeses. With an aroma of cherry and raspberry, Nepenthe Wines  2021 Pinot Noir is smooth and velvety. Matured in French oak for 10 months before bottling, it is a beautiful expression of the Adelaide Hills and a wine I will return to time and time again.

Nepenthe Winemaker’s Selection Late Harvest Semillon 2017 is a truly special dessert wine. I purchased several bottles after tasting it at their cellar door launch. This wine has the perfect balance of vibrant fruitiness with a hint of lemon – it made me smile and certainly left an impression. This is definitely one to have on hand in the fridge to create lasting memories around the table at any time of year.

In South Australia we’re spoiled for choice with wineries. The Adelaide Hills is one of our best and largest regions for viticulture and well-suited to producing fruit driven varietals due to its terroir’s soil profile. I hope you enjoy this range of Nepenthe Wines as much as I do, and if you haven’t visited Nepenthe’s new cellar door yet, spring is definitely the time to do so.
